Here you can see the 2x4 in the groove cut in the log, and then the 2x10 is fastened only to that 2x4. There's about 3.5 inches of space above the window. For humidity here in middle Tennessee, they say I won't get any more shrinkage than that, but in other parts of the country, you may need to allow for 6 inches of shrinkage.
